About Our Interns
The International Interns for Project Development (IIPD) is a comprehensive organizational capacity-building program designed to prepare organizations to successfully recruit, host, supervise, and manage international volunteers. The program strengthens institutional capacity by developing the systems, policies, procedures, and practical skills required to establish sustainable international volunteer programs.
Through a combination of organizational assessment, customized training, technical assistance, mentoring, and implementation support, organizations gain the knowledge and confidence to engage international volunteers in a professional, ethical, and effective manner. The program also provides guidance on governance, safeguarding, volunteer management, partnership development, and relevant legal and regulatory considerations in Nepal, helping organizations create meaningful volunteer experiences while maximizing community impact.

Program Modules
Organizational Readiness Assessment
Every organization begins with a comprehensive readiness assessment to determine its capacity to engage international volunteers. This module evaluates organizational governance, leadership commitment, project suitability, operational systems, human resources, communication practices, safeguarding measures, and overall institutional readiness. The assessment identifies strengths, challenges, and capacity gaps, forming the basis for a customized action plan that guides the organization's journey toward international volunteer readiness.
International Volunteer Program Design
A successful volunteer program requires careful planning and alignment with an organization's mission and objectives. In this module, organizations learn how to design structured and sustainable international volunteer programs by identifying appropriate projects, defining volunteer roles and responsibilities, establishing program goals, developing implementation plans, and creating meaningful volunteer experiences that generate value for both the organization and the community.
International Volunteer Recruitment
Recruiting international volunteers requires a professional and strategic approach. This module equips organizations with the knowledge and practical tools needed to attract suitable volunteers from around the world. Participants learn how to prepare volunteer opportunity descriptions, identify target audiences, promote volunteer opportunities, develop application and screening procedures, conduct interviews, evaluate candidates, and select volunteers whose skills, experience, and interests align with organizational needs.
Volunteer Hosting and Management
Providing a positive volunteer experience is essential for building long-term international partnerships. This module focuses on developing systems for volunteer orientation, onboarding, supervision, mentoring, communication, cultural integration, performance support, conflict resolution, volunteer wellbeing, and recognition. Organizations also learn best practices for creating safe, inclusive, and rewarding environments that encourage volunteers to contribute effectively.
Policies, Procedures, and Documentation
Professional volunteer programs require clear policies and operational guidelines. This module supports organizations in developing essential documentation, including volunteer policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), volunteer handbooks, codes of conduct, volunteer agreements, safeguarding policies, emergency response procedures, risk management plans, and operational manuals. These resources help ensure consistency, accountability, transparency, and effective volunteer management.
Legal Compliance, Safeguarding, and Risk Management
Organizations engaging international volunteers must operate responsibly and in accordance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements. This module provides guidance on government compliance, immigration and visa considerations, labor law considerations, internship and apprenticeship distinctions, organizational responsibilities, safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, occupational health and safety, insurance considerations, ethical volunteer engagement, and risk management practices. The objective is to help organizations establish legally compliant and ethically responsible volunteer programs.
International Partnerships and Collaboration
Long-term success depends on building strong international relationships. This module helps organizations identify and develop partnerships with universities, volunteer-sending organizations, international NGOs, academic institutions, professional associations, and global networks. Participants learn partnership development strategies, communication techniques, collaboration models, and methods for maintaining productive international relationships that support volunteer recruitment and organizational growth.
Marketing and International Outreach
International volunteers need to clearly understand an organization's mission, programs, and available opportunities. This module focuses on strengthening organizational visibility through effective marketing and communication. Organizations learn how to prepare volunteer information packages, improve website content, develop promotional materials, strengthen their digital presence, communicate effectively with international audiences, and market volunteer opportunities using appropriate online platforms and communication channels.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement
Continuous learning and improvement are fundamental to maintaining a successful volunteer program. This module introduces practical monitoring and evaluation systems that help organizations measure volunteer performance, assess program effectiveness, collect volunteer and stakeholder feedback, evaluate community impact, prepare reports, and implement continuous improvements. These systems support accountability, organizational learning, and long-term program sustainability.
The program concludes with hands-on implementation support to ensure organizations can confidently apply the knowledge and systems developed throughout the program. Our team provides mentoring, technical assistance, document reviews, practical guidance, and readiness verification as organizations establish and operationalize their international volunteer programs. By the end of this module, participating organizations will possess the capacity, systems, policies, and confidence required to independently recruit, host, supervise, and manage international volunteers according to internationally recognized good practices.
Program Modules
Application and Initial Consultation
Organizations begin by submitting an application expressing their interest in participating in the International Volunteer Readiness Program. Following the application, our team conducts an initial consultation to understand the organization's mission, programs, objectives, previous experience with volunteers, organizational capacity, and expectations. This allows us to determine the organization's readiness and recommend the most appropriate capacity-building approach.
Organizational Readiness Assessment
A comprehensive assessment is conducted to evaluate the organization's preparedness for engaging international volunteers. We assess governance, leadership commitment, organizational structure, project suitability, human resources, operational systems, communication practices, safeguarding measures, legal considerations, and existing policies and procedures. The findings are compiled into a Readiness Assessment Report that identifies strengths, capacity gaps, and priority areas for improvement.
Capacity Building and Training
Based on the assessment results, we deliver customized capacity-building sessions tailored to the organization's needs. Through workshops, practical exercises, coaching, and technical guidance, participants develop the knowledge and skills required to establish and manage successful international volunteer programs. Training combines international best practices with practical approaches suitable for the Nepalese context.
Program Development and System Strengthening
We work closely with the organization to establish the systems and documentation required for effective volunteer engagement. This includes developing volunteer policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), volunteer role descriptions, recruitment processes, application and screening procedures, orientation plans, supervision systems, safeguarding measures, and volunteer management tools. Every component is designed to strengthen institutional capacity and ensure sustainable program implementation.
Implementation Support and Mentoring
Capacity building extends beyond training. During implementation, our team provides ongoing mentoring, technical assistance, document reviews, problem-solving support, and practical guidance as the organization applies the systems developed throughout the program. We work alongside the organization to address implementation challenges, strengthen operational practices, and build confidence in managing international volunteers.
Readiness Review and Quality Assurance
Once implementation is complete, a comprehensive readiness review is conducted to evaluate the organization's progress against the program framework. We assess whether the required policies, systems, procedures, and operational practices are in place, identify any remaining gaps, and provide recommendations for further improvement. This quality assurance process helps ensure that the organization is prepared to engage international volunteers responsibly and effectively.
International Volunteer Readiness
Upon successful completion of the program, the organization achieves International Volunteer Readiness. At this stage, it possesses the organizational capacity, systems, policies, procedures, and practical knowledge required to independently recruit, host, supervise, and manage international volunteers. Organizations are also equipped to establish sustainable international volunteer programs, foster global partnerships, and provide meaningful volunteer experiences that contribute to long-term community impact.
